Whether your baby wears cloth diapers or not, I bet at some point in your life, you have hand-washed something. Maybe it was a delicate item, or an article of clothing you wanted to wear that day and didn't have time to go through the whole laundry cycle. And I'll bet that you discovered hand-washing is nothing but good old common sense.
So when it comes to getting cloth diapers cleaned the "old fashioned way," don't be intimidated. Because you get them clean in the same way that you would other very dirty things. Use lots of agitation, a reliable detergent and plenty of warm or hot water. That's pretty much it!
Here's my simple photo tutorial for handwashing diapers and covers.
Educating people about the simplicity and affordability of flat diapers is the main reason behind the annual Flats & Handwashing Challenge, now hosted by the Cloth Diaper Podcast. Whether you're trying to save money or are in a true emergency, flats offer a cheap and flexible solution.
During the 2016 challenge, we used flour sack towels, which are about a dollar apiece at Wal-Mart and Target. Although not as soft and absorbent as actual flat diapers, they will do the trick in a pinch and are affordable enough for pretty much anyone.
I'm also hosting a giveaway
to encourage more families to try flats!

I have been surprised at how much I love flats. The was up so well and dry so fast! They are perfect for newborns!
ReplyDeleteI love Nicki's muslin flats and plan to use them for the challenge this year. I also plan to use flannel receiving blankets and maybe a couple shirts. I love flats all the time but don't usually handwash.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI use flats because I like to fold them to fit different covers better. I also use them as added protection against wetness. I never hand washed though. Barbara
ReplyDeleteWhen I first received flats I wasn't a huge fan of them. My husband and I weren't able to wash clothes all but once a week for a month so I decided to hand wash and dry diapers. I pretty much only used flats and it worked wonderfully and I started to really like how easy they were to clean and I was glad I ended up bringing my flats with me since it would have taken much longer for my pocket diapers and AIO's to dry!
ReplyDeletethank you for a great giveaway.. we have tried different styles of diapers flats remind me of old school diapers
ReplyDeleteExcited about this giveaway!
